SYNOPSIS

A young man with Down syndrome stakes on a superhero identity to muster the bravery to profess his love to a childhood friend. Showing up uninvited at her farewell party, he soon finds himself involved in a dangerous test of courage.

Nico Randel als Max hat mich ebenso überzeugt wie Maria Dragus als Tess, eine junge Frau, die hin- und hergerissen ist zwischen ehrlicher Zuneigung zu ihrem alten Nachbarsfreund und dem Gefühl von Peinlichkeit gegenüber ihrer coolen Clique. Emile V. Schlesser beschreibt seine Protagonisten mit großer Zuneigung und Nachvollziehbarkeit. In atmosphärischen Bildern bleibt der Film bis zum Schluss berührend."

artistic statement

The story of "Superhero" is a very personal one. It is an exploration of the masks we constantly wear to blend in, to conform, to be like the others – in order to protect our true vulnerable selves. Laying bare what's usually hidden behind a mask can be scary. Like jumping into the unknown. With "Superhero", I did not only want to tell a story around the theme of inclusion, but equally hint at moments where one may overcome this urge to belong. Sometimes we desperately want to be part of the wrong tribe, even if that would hurt us. Shouldn't we rather be alone and stay honest to ourselves instead of belonging to a toxic group and put on a facade? True self-acceptance may be our only superpower.
